QUEEN VICTORIA
Auld Lang Syne 7"
2010
Abaddon
[experimental rock, avant folk]
MF (28 MB, rip: UAX)
Following hot on the heels of this year's excellent There Will Come Soft Rains tape (released by Stunned Records), Queen Victoria's Nick Malkin unleashes yet another winner. This seven inch, recorded some time ago but only now officially released through Abaddon Records, sports less of the more experimental drone parts found scattered around on Soft Rains, leaving the listener with three relatively straightforward songs. The A side and title track is the obvious high point here, quietly (and sort of optimistically) trotting along before finally bursting into life at around the five-and-a-half minute mark, with a restrained but very effective guitar solo. Two shorter and more sombre tracks fill up the B side, both highly listenable. As far as I know this one has not yet sold out, so I hope whoever likes this opts to support the artist by buying a copy. You can get it here (contact the label as it does not appear to be listed on the site).
