Look at that amazingly over-the-top cover. This thing compiles 136 of the earliest tracks (as you can probably guess they are not very long) the band recorded before signing to Relapse. Most of this sounds a bit closer to Pig Destroyer (Scott Hull plays in both bands) than their later stuff, but with the usual insane drum machine blastbeats that at times reach a thousand beats per minute. Just silly, yet so much fun to listen to.

This album, Head Of David's second, is notable for a couple of reasons. First, this was Justin Broadrick's band after he left Napalm Death (imagine leaving Napalm Death in 1986) and before he founded the excellent Godflesh (and later the not-quite-as-excellent Jesu). Secondly, I believe this was one of Steve Albini's very first recording jobs. Which shows, as it sounds a lot like the early Big Black records. And it's quite good. But get Big Black's records first.

My Favorite 2009 James Beard Award Winners

Fat may have won the James Beard Foundation Award for Cookbook of the Year but the one that I am most interested in purchasing is The Big Fat Duck Cookbook,
by Dominic Davies, which won for best photography!
At $250 a book it may not be on everyone’s list, 
but with pictures like these can you blame me!
The other winner on my shopping list is The Food You Crave: Luscious Recipes for a Healthy Life,
by Ellie Krieger, which won the award for best health focus. 
This is a healthful cookbook to get excited about – healthy, delicious and she even encourages you to include a little fat!

which I featured on this Blog a few months ago, won the award for Cookbook, Category: Cooking from a Professional Point of View!

The James Beard Foundation Award Winners

Time magazine calls The James Beard Foundation Awards the food equivalent of the Oscars.
Earlier this week in a ceremony held at The Lincoln Center, the 2009 JBF awarded prizes in 38 categories. Some highlights… Jean Georges was awarded Outstanding Restaurant;

Cookbook of the year went to Fat: An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient, with Recipes.

David Ogden Stiers is gay

The popular actor David Ogden Stiers has openly said that he' s gay, and he is proud of it.
He has admitted his sexual orientation to the blog "Gossip Boy". Also, David has produced fear tell it that being gay closes many doors.
David Ogden Stiers (born October 31, 1942) is an actor, voice actor, and musician, noted for his role in the television sitcom M * A * S * H as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III and the science fiction drama The Dead Zone as Reverend Gene Purdy. A connoisseur of classical music, Stiers has been a guest conductor for over 50 Orchestras in North America and maintained a position as associate conductor of the Newport Symphony Orchestra and the Ernest Bloch Music Festival. He has also conducted for the Boston Pops Orchestra.

I already posted this fantastic album a few months ago, but the first one was pretty bad vinyl rip. Fortunately I've found a much better rip. This album is widely considered the best Paysage d'Hiver release, and I'm not going to argue against that. Three really long and cold tracks. Think Burzum meets Darkspace (which this guy later went on to form). A must download for anyone who cares even the slightest about black metal.

Instrumental outtakes from the Lick My Decals Off, Baby sessions (supposedly, so I'm not sure why it's tagged as being from 1972). It was recorded directly to tape, so the sound quality is so-so.
