Limoncello: The Perfect Gift

By Erin Ferucci
Celebrity Lifestyle Designer

Looking for the perfect present for your the adults on your gift list? Homemade Limoncello is delicious treat that will be sure to please everyone on your list. It's inexpensive to make at this time of year when ripe lemons are cheap.

What you will need:

15 or 20 ripe lemons- It is important to buy them right off the tree. You are going to be using the skins for zest, so you don't want the variety that you would buy in grocery store (those are usually coated with wax). So buy fresh organic lemons at the Farmer's market or pick them right off of your tree if you live in Southern California.

2 Bottles of 80 Proof Vodka or Everclear

3 cups of Water

3 cups of Sugar

2 -large (at least 3 liters) glass containers with lids

2-4 glass jars with resealable lids (the size will depend on how large you would like your gift to be)
Wash the glass containers thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Rinse them well and then sterilize them in boiling water for at least a few minutes. Set them on a rack or dish towel to cool.

Wash the lemons thoroughly, remove any blemishes and all stems and ends, you only want to use perfectly yellow skin. Zest the lemons using great caution to get only zest and no pith. Pith is the white part directly below the skin. Pith is bitter and will make your Limoncello bitter, so avoid getting any in your luscious mix!
Put all of the zest into the glass containers. Pour the vodka on top. Make sure that all of the zest is submerged in the vodka and leave at least 2 inches of head space between the top of the liquid and the top of the jar. Put the lid on the jar and seal tightly.

Put the jars in a cool, dark place to rest. The zest needs to marinate for at least 2 weeks, but you can leave it for up to 3 months! The longer you wait the better your limoncello will taste.

About 2-4 weeks before gift giving time it is time to make the simple syrup that will finish the recipe. Place the water and sugar in a heavy saucepan and heat slowly while you stir. Gradually the sugar will all dissolve. When it has dissolved, let it cool. Once the simple syrup is thoroughly cooled add it to the zest/vodka mixture. Reseal the jar and leave it in it's cool, dark place for at least 2 more weeks.
At least a week before gift giving bottle your limoncello in clean sterilized jars. Strain all of the zest from the liquid before bottling. You can do this using coffee filters or clean cheesecloth. Keep the bottled gifts in a cool, dark location for at least another week. Before giving my gifts I look to put them in the freezer and attach a pretty ribbon with a tag that says: Serve Chilled. Don't be surprised if your recipients ask for more!

I tried to review the new Om record (God Is Good), but the process only reminded me of my incapability to write anything interesting. Instead I'll just leave you with a warm recommentation from me. Don't listen to the critics, it is a really good record, probably even a great one. As for the new Six Organs record, I am yet to hear it. I'm sure it's good, not great. This posted here is a 7" split they did together a few years ago. It's not really very good to be honest, but there's bound to be people out there looking for it, so here you go. If you haven't heard Om and/or Six Organce Of Admittance, check out Conference Of The Birds (or the aforementioned God Is Good) and The Sun Awakens (or perhaps one of the earlier ones? I'm not really an expert on Six Organs), respectively.

MF (119 MB)

This is a one-hour radio show that MES did for Greenwich Sound Radio back in 1983. It consists of MES ranting (big surprise there), reading his own poetry, getting interviewed by the radio station and playing some tunes. It's Mark E. Smith, so of course it's going to be immensely entertaining in itself. But the real treat here is easily the four The Fall songs he plays, two live and two studio tracks, taking up almost half of the entire show. Fantastic Life in particular is essential.

Eggs florentine recipe

Eggs florentine recipe

1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen chopped spinach, cooked & drained
1 (11 oz.) can condensed Cheddar cheese soup
4 eggs
1 tbsp. milk
2 tsp. minced dry onion
1 tsp. mustard
1/2 c. croutons

Combine spinach and 1/2 of the soup. Spoon into individual casseroles. Spread evenly on bottom and up sides. Break 1 egg into each casserole. Bake in 350 degree oven 20-25 minutes or until eggs are set. In pan heat and stir remaining soup, milk, onion and mustard. Spoon over eggs. Garnish with croutons.

Bon appetit!

Corpus Delicti

Corpus delicti

Corpus delicti
(plural: corpora delicti) (Latin: "body of crime") is a term from Western jurisprudence which refers to the principle that it must be proven that a crime has occurred before a person can be convicted of committing the crime. For example, a person cannot be tried for larceny unless it can be proven that property has been stolen. Likewise, in order for a person to be tried for arson it must be proven that a criminal act resulted in the burning of a property. Black's Law Dictionary (6th ed.) defines "corpus delicti" as: "the fact of a crime having been actually committed."

In the Anglo-American legal system, the concept has its outgrowth in several principles. Many jurisdictions hold as a legal rule that a defendant's out-of-court confession, alone, is not sufficient evidence to prove the defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. See, e.g., Wong Sun v. United States, 371 U.S. 471, 497 n.14, 83 S.Ct. 407, 9 L.Ed.2d 441 (1963)(citing to corpus delicti rule and stating: "For the history and development of the corroboration requirement, see 7 Wigmore, Evidence [3d ed. 1940], §§ 2070-2071; Note, Proof of the Corpus Delicti Aliunde the Defendant's Confession, 103 U. of Pa. L. Rev. 638-649 [1955]. For the present scope and application of the rule, see 2 Underhill, Criminal Evidence [5th ed. 1956], §§ 402-403. For a comprehensive collection of cases, see Annot., 45 A. L. R.2d 1316 [1956].") A corollary to this rule is that an accused cannot be convicted solely upon the testimony of an accomplice. Some jurisdictions also hold that without first showing independent corroboration that a crime happened, the prosecution may not introduce evidence of the defendant's statement.

Specific Offenses

General- All corpus delicti requires at a minimum: 1) The occurrence of the specific injury; and 2) some criminal agency as the source of the injury. For example:

* Homicide - 1. An individual has died; and 2. By a criminal act.

* Larceny - 1. Property missing; and 2. Because it was stolen

Misinterpretation

Evidence in the case of British serial killer John George Haigh indicated that he decided to destroy the bodies of his victims with acid because he had the mistaken belief that, in the absence of a corpse, murder could not be proven because there was no corpus delicti. Haigh had misinterpreted the Latin word corpus as a literal body rather than a figurative one.

one-year anniversary!

I just noticed that the blog has been up and running for a year now (one year and three days to be precise). 500+ albums/EPs/7"s thus far and I am yet to receive any lawsuits (most of the music here is out of print and forsaken, after all). More surprisingly, perhaps, only once during the past year have I been asked to take down a link to an album (I'm looking at you, Alvin Lucier['s record label]). I assume this serves as an indication that small bands/artists are now realizing that blogs like this one are actually helping them spread their music, reach new audiences and keeping long-deleted music from disappearing into obscurity. So far the blog has had more than 200 000 visitors and there has been more than 90 000 downloads. Big thanks to everyone who has posted kind comments and especially to those who have helped me with certain hard-to-find records.

Late Summer Lemon Fantasy by Erin Ferucci, Designs 4 Living

By Erin Ferucci
Celebrity Lifestyle Designer

I'm in the middle of a late summer lemon fantasy. I was in a meeting with one of my assistants talking about great homemade Christmas gifts and the subject of limoncello came up, which got me thinking about this fabulous restaurant I visited in Capri a few summers ago. Da Paolino is situated in the middle of a lemon grove. The branches of the lemon trees are literally the roof of the terrace. The have to most luscious Italian waiters that serve lemon inspired heaven on a plate. I had lemon fettuccine, lemon creme puffs and of course perfectly chilled limoncello. To sit in a lemon scented grove, your sun kissed by the Capri sun and sip this heady nectar....Ahhhhhh.

Even if you can't afford to fly to Capri in this economy you can still give the gift of limoncello - stay tuned to the blog, I promise to give the complete recipe and how to...

My Mad Crush on Darryl Carter by Erin Ferucci, Designs 4 Living

By Erin Ferucci
Celebrity Lifestyle Designer
I have a bit of a designer's crush on Darryl Carter.
It all started with a blog I did on Kitchen Designs that I like... In the blog I featured Darryl Carter's personal kitchen in his country house in Virginia...I sent him an email to tell him how much I admire his work and to check out my blog...he was sooo nice... his company actually sent me a thank you letter!!
Talk about class..... I then proceeded to say I would like to marry him in another life, that we would be very happy together...he was amused!!! Which was the point.I love his class, his effortless style, his simplicity, his all around good taste...and I find him handsome.
He looks like a gentle person who is nice. Check out his new collection for Thomasville Furniture. I believe in supporting other designers and this is truly beautiful work. His fresh "Americana" style has a wonderful taste level. Love his style!

Dressed in Black by Erin Ferucci, Designs 4 Living

By Erin Ferucci

Black. It's bold, versatile and back! In this month's Elle Decor, there was a story on Badgley and Mischka's weekend getaway farm, in Kentucky. As a designer, I am constantly surrounded by colors, textures, finishes, various fabrics, etc, etc.
Seeing color so much, I tend to stay neutral at home, myself.
Seeing their black barn and black kitchen and black dining room and black bedroom....I was like...hmmmmm?? They seem to have made it work for them....I thought I had a lot of cookbooks!! I love the way they color coded them.
